HDHMR vs plywood in Mumbai — what the denser board is, and what it is not
HDHMR is the board homeowners are sold when someone wants a single answer to Mumbai humidity: high-density, high-moisture-resistant, “use it everywhere.” It is a pressed fibreboard, denser than ordinary MDF. It is not plywood, it has no cross-laminated plies, and it is not a synonym for BWP or marine ply.

What people are actually being sold
The pitch is usually four promises: it will not swell, it is calibrated and smooth under laminate, it is treated against termites, and it can replace plywood for the whole kitchen. Some of that is a fair description of a dense fibreboard used as a shutter. The last promise is the one that fails in a sink unit.
We do not repeat a mill’s termite or waterproof test as if we had run it. If a sheet carries a grade name, that name goes on the quote in the supplier’s words. A spoken “waterproof HDHMR” is not a grade.
Moisture, without the brochure
HDHMR handles humid interior air better than cheap interior MDF, provided the edges are closed. A kitchen in Mumbai is not only humid air. The sink base gets a drip, a bottle trap weeps, a hob run takes steam, and a washing-machine alcove condensates. A fibreboard that takes that water in at a cut can swell and stay soft. Density slows the mistake. It does not cancel it.
Plywood in a BWP or marine grade is still what we write for those boxes. HDHMR does not become that board because the price was close.
Screws, weight, and a Mumbai stair
Hinges and channels are fixed into the board, then often shifted a few millimetres on install day because the wall was not square. Plywood generally survives that second screw better. HDHMR can hold hardware in a fresh hole. A hole that has been re-drilled in a fibreboard crumbles, and the damper on a soft-close hinge cannot compensate for a screw that is no longer biting. Hardware only works in sound board. A damper does not fix a stripped hole.
HDHMR is dense, so a tall shutter is heavy. We do not invent a kilogram figure. We do notice it on a narrow service stair in an older Fort or Dadar building, and on the hinge that has to carry that shutter for years. If the lift is small, say so at the visit. Weight is a site fact, not a reason to pretend the board is stronger than ply.

When we will specify HDHMR
- Shutter cores where the sample is flat, the edges will be banded, and the room is not a wet zone
- A dry wardrobe component or a loft panel, written separately from the sides if the sides are ply
- A routed or painted detail that wants a uniform fibre face
When we will not: as a silent swap for the sink unit to make two quotes look alike, or as “one board for the house” so the quote can stay a single line. Zoning is allowed. Hiding the zone is not.
What the quote should show
- The letters HDHMR on the parts that are HDHMR, not on the whole job by implication
- Thickness in millimetres
- The plywood grade and thickness on the wet boxes beside it
- Edge banding, including shutters
- Hinge and channel specification, because the board has to hold them
Indicative starting bands, for scale only: kitchens from ₹85,000 (about a 10 ft straight run) and wardrobes from ₹22,000 (about a 6×8 ft hinged unit). HDHMR instead of a ply shutter, or ply instead of an all-fibreboard carcass, moves the quote. It does not create a new city rate. Cost context sits in the kitchen cost guide.

FAQ
It can be a good shutter core in a dry interior. It is not better than plywood for a sink carcass, a hob run, or a wardrobe on a damp wall. Those boxes want a named ply grade.
No. It is sold as high-moisture-resistant. Closed edges and a dry room are part of that claim. Standing water in a sink unit is outside it. We will not call an HDHMR kitchen waterproof.
Yes. That is a normal split when the shutter sample suits you and the wet zone is still ply. Both have to be written. One product name must not cover both.
In a fresh hole, often well enough. If the hinge has to move because the wall is out of plumb, plywood is more forgiving. Tell us about old buildings at the visit so we do not discover that on install day.
HDHMR shutters are dense. Tall doors load the hinges, and full sheets are awkward in a small service lift or a narrow stair. We plan delivery before we lock a heavy shutter on an upper floor.
