Veneer vs laminate in Mumbai — which face belongs on the shutter

Interior wood door design inspiration

Veneer and laminate are faces. They are not the carcass. Veneer is a thin slice of real wood, bonded to a core and finished with a polish or lacquer. Laminate is a resin sheet, usually with a printed grain or a solid colour, pressed onto that core. The monsoon cares about both, and it cares more about whether the core and the edges are closed.

Design inspiration

If you are choosing the board behind the face, start with marine ply vs commercial ply or MDF vs plywood. If you are choosing a high-gloss acrylic shutter against laminate — fingerprints, edge polish, the mirror-like face — that is a different decision. We do it on site with samples. This page does not pretend to be that comparison.

What you will live with

Veneer

You see grain, figure, and small differences from door to door. That variation is the material, not a defect, and it is also why a chip in the showroom is not a promise that an eight-foot run will look like one printed sheet. A sound veneer can often be refreshed when the polish dulls. A veneer that has lifted because water reached the glue line is a replacement, not a polish.

Laminate

The face is uniform. It wipes. A scratch that stays in the colour layer is usually lived with or the shutter is replaced. You do not French-polish it back. Edge banding has to match the face, or be a deliberate contrast. A near-miss band on a wood-print laminate reads as a mistake in daylight.

Humidity and a west-facing window

Both faces fail when the core takes water. They fail differently.

Sun is the other Mumbai-specific check. A living room that takes west light will show a printed grain differently from a polished timber face. We do not claim either is fade-proof. We look at the wall in the afternoon if that is when you use the room, not only under a workshop tube light.

A veneer on a weak core is still a weak shutter. Ask what the core is — ply, MDF, or HDHMR — and the thickness. The face price and the core price are different lines. Veneer is usually the dearer face on the same carcass because of the leaf and the finishing labour. We do not publish a percentage. If a quote is one number, you cannot tell which face you were sold.

Kitchen, wardrobe, and the pieces in between

Most of the kitchens we build wear laminate, because the sink and the hob are wiped every day. A veneer kitchen is a considered brief, not a default, and the sink shutter is the one we talk about first. Wardrobes are where veneer more often earns its cost: you are looking at a wall of it, and it is not taking dishwater. A TV unit or a bedroom door is the same logic at a smaller scale.

Cane, fluted glass, and mirror are neither veneer nor laminate. They can sit beside either face. They are extra lines, the way a mirror bay is extra on the wardrobe cost guide.

How to choose without a showroom spotlight

  1. See samples in the room, or at least in daylight, not only in a photograph
  2. Decide the wet doors first. Laminate is the usual answer there
  3. If you want veneer, ask which core is under it and how the edge is finished
  4. If you might extend the run later, ask how matching will work
  5. Keep carcass grade on its own line. A timber face does not upgrade a commercial sink box

Indicative bands, so the face is not mistaken for the whole job: kitchens from ₹85,000 for about a 10 ft straight run, wardrobes from ₹22,000 for about a 6×8 ft hinged unit, simpler furniture pieces from ₹18,000. A veneer face moves a quote up from those bands. The visit is free. Workshop: 208, Wakefield House, Ballard Pier, Fort, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400001.

FAQ

It is a different face, not a better carcass. Veneer is the right choice when you want real grain and you will look after the finish. Laminate is the right choice when the surface is wiped every day, especially in a kitchen.

The face survives if the finish stays intact and the core stays dry. A shut, steamy bathroom or a sink shutter left wet can lift veneer. Laminate is more forgiving of a wipe and still fails if the edge is open. Neither face replaces a moisture-resistant carcass in a wet zone.

Often yes, when the veneer itself is still stuck down and thick enough to take a fresh polish. We look at the piece before we promise that. A bubbled face is usually a replacement.

Because they are cut from timber, not printed. Some variation is normal. If you need a perfectly even run, say so — laminate may be the honest face, or we select leaves with that limit in mind.

No. Veneer is bonded to a core, and that core can be ply, MDF, or HDHMR. Ask which, and the thickness. The carcass behind the shutter is yet another line.
