Laminate vs acrylic kitchens in Mumbai: which shutter to choose
If you are choosing kitchen shutters in Mumbai, the two names you will hear first are laminate and acrylic. The useful question is not which one is “premium.” It is which face suits the way you cook, what sits behind that face, and what is actually written on the quote.
A shutter is the door or drawer front you see. The carcass is the box behind it. Gloss on the door does not make the sink unit moisture-resistant. For the board grade in humid kitchens, read marine ply vs commercial ply. For what else moves a kitchen bill, read modular kitchen cost in Mumbai.
This page covers:
- What laminate and acrylic shutters are, in workshop terms
- Where PU, glass, and fluted faces sit beside that choice
- How steam, oil, fingerprints, and window light show up in a Mumbai kitchen
- How the choice moves Mumbai Master Carpentry’s indicative kitchen band — without a fake per-sheet price
- What to read on an itemised quote before you compare two lump sums

Shutter faces — design inspiration
Licensed stock photos of kitchens, not completed client projects. The photo shows a face — laminate, gloss, Shaker, or handleless — not the carcass grade behind it.

Shutters and carcass do different jobs
The shutter takes the daily wipe, the oil splash, and the look you chose from a sample. The carcass takes the screw loads from hinges and channels, and whatever moisture reaches a cut edge near the sink or hob.
Ask for both on the quote: shutter face (laminate, acrylic, PU, glass) and carcass grade and thickness. A low lump sum that is silent on one of those lines is not the same kitchen as a quote that names both.
Laminate shutters
In modular kitchens, a laminate shutter is a decorative laminate pressed onto a core board, with the edges banded. The colour and texture live in that sheet. Matt, textured, woodgrain, and high-gloss laminates all exist. “Laminate” does not automatically mean matt, and it does not automatically mean cheap.
In day-to-day use, a textured or matt laminate hides fingerprints and fine scratches better than a mirror gloss. Edges are the weak line: a chipped edge band near the hob or sink lets moisture into the core. That is a detailing issue, not a reason to dismiss the finish.
Laminate is usually the more forgiving choice when the kitchen is used hard — frying, children, a passage that brushes the tall unit — and when you want a wide colour range without paying for a gloss reflection.
Acrylic shutters
An acrylic shutter is a gloss acrylic face on a core board. The look people want is the even, reflective colour you see in photographs. It shows more: fingerprints, water spots, and fine scratches read clearly because the surface is smooth and shiny.
Acrylic is not a waterproof kitchen. Steam, an open edge, or a raw cut-out still reach the core. Heat from a hob that sits too close to a tall gloss shutter is a placement question we settle on site, not something the word “acrylic” solves.
It is a fair choice when you want that gloss, you are willing to wipe it, and the quote names which faces are acrylic — including tall units and the chimney area, not only the doors in the render.
PU, glass, and fluted faces
Many Mumbai quotes are not a pure laminate kitchen or a pure acrylic kitchen. On our jobs, shutters can also be PU (a painted finish, gloss or satin), glass or fluted uppers, or a mix. The modular kitchen page lists laminate, acrylic, and PU as finish options that are quoted, not as a single package.
PU can look close to acrylic from across the room. It is still a different line on the quote: paint build-up, sheen, and how a later touch-up would be done. Glass and fluted uppers add a frame, edge work, and often lighting. Ask which elevations are which finish. A “gloss kitchen” photo can hide laminate sides and a glass niche.
Laminate vs acrylic — what to compare
We do not publish lab scores, fade ratings, or a brand league table for shutter sheets. Samples in your light beat a catalogue claim. This is the practical comparison we use in the workshop conversation:
| Topic | Laminate shutter | Acrylic shutter |
|---|---|---|
| What you are buying | A decorative laminate face on a core, edges banded | A gloss acrylic face on a core, edges finished as specified |
| Daily look | Matt and textured options hide fingerprints and light scratches more easily. Gloss laminate does not. | Even gloss and strong colour. Fingerprints, spots, and fine scratches show. |
| Where quotes diverge | Often the lower shutter line for the same carcass. Still varies by texture, thickness, and how many faces are included. | Usually moves the same carcass up. Tall units and the chimney run should be named, or the saving is only on the doors in the photo. |
| What it does not do | It does not choose the carcass grade, the hinge, or the sink sealing. | It does not waterproof the kitchen or replace a moisture-resistant carcass. |
Mumbai kitchens: steam, oil, and light
Coastal humidity and a long monsoon sit in the background. The daily damage in a working kitchen is more ordinary: oil mist near the hob, a wet cloth left on an edge, a window that throws hard light on a gloss run, and a sink base that occasionally drips.
- Hob and chimney run — ask which finish is on those shutters, and whether the shutter stops short of the heat.
- Sink base — the face matters less than the carcass grade and sealed cut-outs. See the ply guide.
- Window light — gloss acrylic and gloss laminate both reflect. Look at a sample on that wall, not only under workshop lights.
- Passage and tall units — bags and shoulders hit the end panel. A textured laminate is often the calmer choice there.
How the choice moves the quote
Mumbai Master Carpentry’s modular kitchen band starts from ₹85,000 for a roughly 10 ft straight run. That figure is an indicative starting band for the joinery, not a laminate package and not an acrylic package. It is not a city-wide rate.
On the same carcass, acrylic shutters usually cost more than laminate shutters. PU, glass, and fluted uppers move the quote as well. We do not publish a per-square-foot price for either face. The itemised quote after a free site visit is the bill.
The same logic applies to wardrobe faces, but the wardrobe starting band is different: ₹22,000 for a roughly 6×8 ft hinged wardrobe, loft not included. Read wardrobe cost in Mumbai before you treat a kitchen shutter price as a wardrobe price. Hinges and channels are a separate line again — see kitchen and wardrobe hardware.
Full-home carpentry packages on our site typically start from ₹55,000. That is another indicative band, not a shutter rate.
How to read the quote
- Which elevations are laminate, which are acrylic, which are PU or glass — including tall units, fillers, and the chimney area
- Whether the end panels and the exposed side match the shutter face
- Carcass grade and thickness, separate from the shutter. Wet zones named.
- Edge banding or the edge finish on acrylic, especially at the sink and hob
- Hinge and channel grade, soft-close or not
- What is excluded: appliances, stone, civil work
A single “acrylic finish” line with no list of faces is how two quotes stop being comparable.
Myths
- “Acrylic means the kitchen is waterproof.” No. The face is gloss. Moisture still attacks open edges and the carcass.
- “Laminate always looks cheap.” No. Texture, colour, and edge work decide that. A tired edge band looks cheap on either finish.
- “Gloss laminate and acrylic are the same product.” No. They can look similar in a photo. They are different sheets and should be different lines on the quote.
- “The shutter brand replaces the ply grade.” No. Read carcass and shutter as separate decisions.
- “The cheapest quote used the same acrylic.” Often it used acrylic on a few doors and laminate everywhere else, or it dropped the carcass grade. Ask for the face list.
What happens on a free site visit
The full sequence is in how we work: visit, drawings, materials and quote, workshop, installation, walkthrough. In short:
- Enquiry by call, WhatsApp, or the form on this page. A photo of the kitchen wall and the window helps.
- Free site visit and measurement, typically within 48 hours on working days. We bring samples when that is the decision you are stuck on.
- Itemised quote naming shutter faces, carcass grade, and hardware. A straight kitchen often lands in the region of 12–18 days after approval; the quote states the timeline for your job.
- Workshop build, installation, walkthrough. Our 1-year workmanship warranty covers defects in joints, hinges, drawers, or finish from our work. It does not cover an unrepaired leak or damage after handover.

FAQ
No. Acrylic gives a more even gloss and shows fingerprints and fine scratches more readily. Textured laminate hides daily wear better. The right face depends on how you cook, the light in the room, and which elevations are actually specified.
No. Acrylic is a face. Steam, open edges, and sink leaks still reach the core and the carcass. Carcass grade and sealed cut-outs are a separate decision.
We do not describe it that way, and we do not publish a per-square-foot acrylic rate. ₹85,000 is the indicative starting band for a roughly 10 ft straight kitchen, not an acrylic package. Acrylic on the same carcass usually moves the quote up. The measured quote is the bill.
They can look similar in a photo. They are different sheets and should be separate lines on the quote. Ask which elevations are which, including tall units and the chimney area.
They are additional finish options we quote, not a third name for acrylic. PU is a painted finish. Glass and fluted uppers add frame and edge work. The quote should list which faces are which.
Often about 12–18 days after design approval and advance, depending on size and finish. You get a confirmed timeline on the quote before work starts.
