Monsoon care for kitchens and wardrobes in Mumbai
Mumbai’s monsoon is long, and the air stays damp between showers. Kitchens and wardrobes do not need a special ritual. They need closed edges, a bit of air, and a leak fixed while it is still a leak. This page is that, in plain language. It is not a warning that your furniture will fail because you live here.

The board behind the shutter matters more than the shutter colour. How those grades differ is in marine ply versus commercial ply. The higher wet-zone grade people ask for by the letters BWP is on BWP plywood for Mumbai kitchens. Ply: what humidity actually does
Moisture enters at a cut edge, a pipe hole, or a foot that sits in splash. A marine or moisture-resistant carcass in the wet zone tolerates that better than a basic commercial board. It does not make the kitchen waterproof. A commercial carcass in a dry bedroom wardrobe can be a rational choice when the quote says so.
You do not need to open every shutter in June to “check the ply”. Look for the early signs: an edge band peeling at a corner, a door that newly rubs, a musty sink cabinet, or a shelf that feels soft at the front edge. Those are worth a photo to a carpenter. A whole-house replacement because the forecast says rain is not.
Edge banding
The edge band is the seal on the cut. When it lifts, water has a path. If the core under it is still firm, sticking it back — or fitting a new band — is often a small job. If the core is already swollen, a new band on soft board will not hold.
- Sink and hob cut-outs should be sealed, not left as raw board
- Don’t store a wet cloth, a mop, or a dripping bottle against a raw edge
- Wipe standing water off a counter and out of a sink unit. You do not need to dry the whole kitchen with a hairdryer
Ventilation
A kitchen that stays shut for weeks with wet utensils in the sink unit will smell damp in any city. Run the chimney or an exhaust when you cook, and leave the sink door open for an hour if the cabinet got wet. That is ordinary use, not a treatment.
Wardrobes on an external wall, or under an AC, have a different problem. Condensate from a badly drained indoor unit can drip onto the top panel. Clothes that went into the wardrobe wet will humidify a closed box. Leave a little air — don’t pack the back solid against the plaster — and don’t push damp laundry to the rear panel. A dehumidifier is optional. An open window on a dry afternoon does most of the work.
What carpentry cannot fix
A leak from the flat above, a failed bathroom waterproofing, or a pipe sweating inside a shutter is not a furniture defect. We will say so. Patching a carcass and leaving the leak is how the same repair comes back in August. Our workmanship warranty covers joints, fit, and finish on work we did. It does not cover a flood, a plumbing leak, or a board you kept wet after we pointed it out.

Ask for carcass grade in the wet zone, sealed cut-outs, and edge banding on the quote. The questions are listed in the kitchen quote checklist. Not by itself. Kitchens in Mumbai live through the monsoon every year. Trouble starts at an open edge, a slow leak, or a wet zone built in a board that was never meant to sit there. Deal with those. Don’t replace a kitchen because it is June.
No. Laminate and acrylic are not oiled like bare timber. Keep edges closed, wipe standing water, and ventilate. A polish is for a finish that actually needs it, after someone has seen the piece.
Not always. If the board under the band is still firm, it is often a small repair. If the board is soft or swollen, that part needs replacing. Send a photo before you assume the worst — see furniture repair.
No. It is the usual recommendation for kitchen wet zones and for wardrobes on damp external walls. A dry internal wardrobe can be a different grade if the quote says so clearly. Read the marine ply guide before you pay extra everywhere by default.
It covers workmanship defects in what we built, for one year. It does not cover a plumbing leak, water left sitting in a sink unit, or a board that was already failing. Hardware follows the maker’s terms where those apply.
