Materials we use — ply, laminates, hardware and edge banding
A shutter colour is what you see. In Mumbai’s humidity, the carcass grade, the edge, and the hardware are what decide whether that colour is still square after a monsoon. This page is the short, honest list of what we specify. It is not a brand league table and not a lab score.

How to read our quote
Four lines should be separate. If they are folded into one lump sum, you cannot tell what you are buying.
- Carcass — the box: grade and thickness of ply (or solid wood, when that is the piece)
- Shutters and faces — laminate, acrylic, PU, veneer, glass, cane, or solid wood
- Hardware — hinges, channels, handles; soft-close only if it is written
- Edges — edge banding on exposed boards, and sealing at sink, hob, and pipe cut-outs
Ply grades in a humid city
We use moisture-resistant carcass board — commonly marine ply — for modular kitchens and for wardrobes on damp or external walls. Commercial ply can be discussed for a dry internal bedroom or a dry storage unit, and only as its own line on the quote. We do not swap a wet-zone carcass down to commercial ply to hit a lower total.
Marine ply is not waterproof. An unsealed edge, a leaking bottle trap, or a wall that stays wet will still swell a good board. Thickness is a separate number from grade. Ask for both in millimetres, for sides, shelves, and backs.
The full wet-zone versus dry-zone reasoning, including what we will not pretend a board can do, is in the marine ply vs commercial ply guide.
Laminates, veneers, and other faces
Laminate is the usual shutter and shelf face: wipeable, and chosen from physical samples at the visit, not from a photo on a phone. Acrylic and PU are the high-gloss options and cost more than standard laminate for the same carcass. Veneer is a real-wood face on an engineered core. Cane, fluted glass, and mirror panels show up on wardrobes and kitchens when the drawing asks for them.
Solid teak and sheesham are for doors, frames, and statement furniture when the quote names the species. MDF and HDF are smooth substrates for painted or high-gloss faces. They are not the default box under a sink.
The homepage materials strip is the same family of options. This page is where those names meet the quote.
Hardware
Soft-close channels and stainless baskets are a specification, not a promise that every job gets the same basket. The photos on this site do not show those internals. Hinge and channel grade — soft-close or not — is a line on the quote. The brand is named there too.
We do not print one hardware brand as “standard on all Mumbai Master Carpentry work.” Maker warranties follow the manufacturer. Our warranty is workmanship: fit, joints, and finish from our carpentry. See what the warranty covers.
Edge banding and cut-outs
Raw board edges drink coastal air. Exposed carcass and shutter edges get edge banding. Cut-outs for sinks, pipes, hobs, and geysers are sealed, not left as sawn ply. If a quote is silent on edges, ask before you compare it with one that includes them. Peeling laminate at a sink is often an edge and a leak, not “the colour fading.”
What we will not claim
- No waterproof kitchen. Moisture-resistant is the honest word.
- No unnamed “premium ply” without grade and thickness.
- No single laminate book size, and no invented shade count.
- No star rating for a board, a hinge, or the workshop.
If you supply the board or the top yourself, workmanship is still ours and material defects are not. We would rather source the carcass so the grade on the quote is the grade that arrives. Starting bands, for context only: kitchens from ₹85,000, wardrobes from ₹22,000, furniture from ₹18,000. Material choice is one reason a quote moves. Details are on the FAQ pricing answer, the kitchen cost guide, and the wardrobe cost guide.

FAQ
No. Dry internal bedrooms can use a commercial or mid-grade carcass if the wall is sound. External walls, bathrooms next door, and known damp get a moisture-resistant discussion on site. Kitchens, especially under the sink, are where we push back on commercial carcass as a silent default.
No. Laminate, acrylic, PU, and veneer are the visible face. The ply grade behind them is a different line. A glossy shutter does not make a weak box moisture-resistant.
The brand and whether it is soft-close are written on your quote. We do not advertise one brand as fitted on every job. The maker’s warranty stays with the maker; our 1-year warranty is workmanship.
Humidity and sink splash enter through open edges and unsealed cut-outs. Edge banding and sealed cut-outs are part of the job, not a decorative extra. Ask to see that line before you accept a lower lump sum.
