Factory modular kitchen vs a carpenter-built kitchen in Mumbai
A factory modular kitchen and a carpenter-built kitchen can look the same on a phone: boxes, shutters, a stone top, a chimney cut-out. They are bought differently. One is designed from a showroom or a catalogue, cut on a panel line, and fitted by an installation crew. The other is measured in the flat, made in a workshop, and fitted by the people who built it. Mumbai Master Carpentry is the second. This page is the tradeoff, not a claim that the first is a scam.

“Modular” only means the kitchen is built as boxes to a module. We build modular kitchens. The choice here is factory-catalogue versus a measured workshop, not modular versus carpentry. Who draws the whole home — a designer or a carpenter — is a different question, answered on carpenter or interior designer.
What you are comparing
| Factory modular | Carpenter-built (our workshop) | |
|---|---|---|
| How it starts | Showroom, catalogue, or a packaged site survey tied to that system. | We stand in the kitchen, then draw to those walls. |
| Walls that are out of plumb | Modules are drawn for square rooms. Packing is sometimes a variation, sometimes a fight with the system. | Packing and scribing are normal in older Mumbai buildings, and they are a line. |
| What the board is | Whatever the package states. Ask, because a shutter photo is not a grade. | Grade and thickness by zone, in writing, before you approve. |
| A change after approval | Possible, often as a revision to a factory order, with a new date. | Possible while it is still in our workshop queue. We reprice the change. We do not pretend it is free. |
| Warranty | A company process, with whatever exclusions the contract prints. | One-year workmanship on the carpentry we built. Hardware follows the maker when a maker is named. |
| Finishes | A wide catalogue is the reason many people go. | What we can sample and source. If we cannot match a code, we say so. |
| Timeline | A production calendar and a city of fitting crews. | A workshop queue. Often about 12–18 days after approval for a kitchen, written per job. |
| Year two | You call the company you paid. | You call the workshop. We are not a national spare-parts counter. A named hardware line can still be replaced because it was a line. |
When a factory package is a fair buy
- The walls are reasonably square and the layout is a straight run or a simple L the module grid likes
- You want a catalogue finish and one company name on the invoice
- You would rather follow that company’s process than stand in a workshop and point at a board
- The contract actually names carcass grade, hardware, and what the warranty excludes
If those are true, a higher or lower total is a real comparison. If they are not on the paper, you are comparing a mood to a kitchen.
When a workshop kitchen fits the flat better
- Older buildings — Fort, Dadar, parts of Bandra — with beams, pipe stacks, and walls that are not square
- You want the sink and hob boxes in a named moisture-resistant grade, and the dry tall units allowed to differ. Read BWP plywood and marine vs commercial ply before you accept one grade word for every box
- The kitchen continues into a utility, a crockery dresser, or a loft that a module fights
- You want the person who measured it to be answerable for the fit
We are not cheaper by identity. A factory price can be keen because the board was quietly downgraded. Our price can be higher because packing, sealing, and the wet-zone grade are in the number. Sometimes the factory price is simply higher because you are paying for the catalogue and the showroom. Line the scopes up. The kitchen quote checklist is the short list. The cost guide is what moves a figure.
Honest limits of a carpenter-built kitchen
- Finish range is the samples we can get, not an infinite book. Bring a code if you must match an existing shutter. If we cannot, we will say so before you pay an advance.
- Capacity is one workshop at 208, Wakefield House, Ballard Pier, Fort. We will not tell you a start date we cannot keep.
- The workmanship warranty is one year on our carpentry. It is not a branded hotline, and it is not a promise against a leak you leave sitting in the sink unit. Details are on the warranty page.
- We do stone coordination and appliance cut-outs as carpentry. We are not the stone contractor or the plumber.
How to compare the two quotes
- Get both prices from a measurement. A showroom rate from a photograph and a workshop rate from a site visit are not the same document. Ask whether someone stood in the kitchen.
- Line up carcass grade by zone. Sink, hob, and dry tall units should each name a board and a thickness. A single word like waterproof is not a line.
- Line up the face, the hardware, and the accessories. Shutter material, soft-close or not, baskets, and corner units move the number as much as the logo on the invoice.
- Line up installation. Packing an out-of-plumb wall, society timings, and who cuts for the hob and sink are labour. They belong on both quotes.
- Read the warranty before the total. One side may cover workmanship on the boxes it built. The other may cover a company process with exclusions. Read both. Then compare the totals.
Our indicative starting band is ₹85,000 for a roughly 10 ft straight run. Use it as scale. Do not use it as a weapon against a showroom number that describes a different kitchen. The visit is free. Call or WhatsApp +91 9987911330. Mumbai, Maharashtra 400001.

FAQ
They usually are. Modular means boxes built to a module and installed on site. The split on this page is factory catalogue versus a local workshop, not modular versus handmade planks.
No. Either side can be higher. The factory number may include a catalogue and a showroom, or it may be low because the carcass grade is thinner than it looks. A workshop number may be higher because packing and wet-zone ply are itemised. Compare those lines before the total.
Often, if we can source the laminate or the other face and the core under it is agreed. Not every catalogue code is available to a workshop. We say so before an advance, rather than near-matching a shutter you will stare at every day.
Yes, if the drawings are buildable and the materials are specified. That path is covered on our carpenter-or-designer page. Bring the drawings to the visit so we are pricing the same kitchen the designer drew.
From us, one year of workmanship on the carpentry we built. Hardware follows the maker’s terms when the quote names a maker. A factory contract is whatever that contract says. Read the exclusions on both.
