Termite-resistant furniture in Mumbai — what carpentry can and cannot do about deemak
Termites, or deemak, are one of the most common reasons Mumbai families replace a wardrobe or kitchen long before it is worn out. Older buildings, damp walls and wooden frames give them cover. No carpenter can honestly sell you termite-proof furniture. What good carpentry can do is make new units much harder to attack, and make any attack easy to spot early.

Signs to check before you build
- Thin mud tubes running up a wall, a door frame or the back of an old unit.
- Wood that sounds hollow when tapped, or gives under a thumb.
- Fine powder or small piles of dust under shelves and skirting.
- Laminate that bubbles or lifts over a soft core, especially low down on a damp wall.
If you see any of these, call a licensed pest-control company first. We are carpenters and we do not do anti-termite chemical treatment. Building new furniture against an active wall only feeds the colony.
What carpentry can and cannot do
| What helps | Why it matters | What it will not do |
|---|---|---|
| Board sold as termite or borer treated, named on the quote | Untreated board is the easiest food in the room | It will not stop a colony already living in the wall |
| A gap and a sealed back on external and bathroom walls | Termites like damp, dark contact with plaster | It will not fix a leak from the flat above |
| A plinth or legs instead of a carcass sitting on the floor | Keeps wood off wet floors and lets you see the joint | It will not replace pest-control treatment of the floor joint |
| Edge-banded or sealed cut edges, shelves and pipe holes | Open cut board takes in moisture fast | It will not make the unit waterproof |
Board choice is covered in more detail on marine ply vs commercial ply, BWP plywood and HDHMR vs plywood. Damp and monsoon care is on monsoon furniture care.
How to spec it on a quote
- Treat the wall before carpentry. If the old unit or the wall shows mud tubes or powdery wood, have a licensed pest-control company treat the wall and floor joint before anything new goes up.
- Name the board grade. Ask for the carcass board grade, including backs and shelves, in writing. If it is sold as termite or borer treated, the quote should say so in the supplier's words.
- Keep a gap from damp walls. Units on external or bathroom walls should sit off the wall with a sealed back, not pressed into a damp plaster face.
- Lift the unit off the floor. A plinth or legs with a sealed or non-wood base keeps the carcass off a wet floor and makes inspection possible.
- Seal every cut edge. Raw cut edges, pipe holes and the back of shelves should be edge-banded or sealed. Open board drinks moisture and gives termites an easy start.
Repair or replace?
If termites have only reached a skirting, a back panel or one shelf, and the wall has been treated, we can cut out and replace those parts. If the side panels are hollow, replacing the unit is usually cheaper and more reliable. See furniture repair for small jobs and the wardrobe cost guide or kitchen cost guide if it needs rebuilding.
Workmanship on what we build is covered for one year — see warranty. A termite attack from an untreated wall is not a workmanship defect, and we will say plainly which one we are looking at.

FAQ
No honest carpenter can promise termite-proof. Treated board, a gap from a damp wall, a sealed plinth and a pest-control treatment before fitting make wooden furniture far more resistant. A colony living in the wall can still find untreated wood. We say resistant, and we write down what was done.
No. We are carpenters. Wall and floor anti-termite treatment should be done by a licensed pest-control company before we install. We will tell you when the old unit shows live activity and pause fitting until the wall is treated.
Sometimes. If the damage is limited to a skirting, a back panel or one shelf, and the activity has been treated, those parts can be cut out and replaced. If the carcass sides are hollow or soft, replacing the unit is usually cheaper than chasing it. We tell you which one after seeing it.
Ask for plywood that the supplier sells as treated against borer and termite, and have that grade name written on the quote. We do not repeat a mill's termite test as if we had run it. Solid wood, MDF and HDHMR each behave differently; the claim belongs on paper, in the supplier's words.
Older buildings, damp walls, wooden door frames and gaps behind built-in wardrobes and kitchens give them cover and moisture. Units fixed tight against a damp external or bathroom wall, or resting directly on the floor, are the usual places we find damage.
