Mumbai Master Carpentry
A bookshelf or wall unit built to your wall, with shelves that stay straight
Upload a photoGet a ballpark priceBook a site visit
Books, files, board games, and the things you want on show pile up fast in a Mumbai flat. A ready-made bookcase rarely fits the wall between a window and a door, and a cheap one bows in the middle within a year. Mumbai Master Carpentry builds bookshelves and living-room wall units to the measured wall: shelf spans sized for the weight, open shelves where you reach often, and closed storage below for the clutter.
Design inspiration

These photos are inspiration for layout, not our completed work. Your unit is drawn for the wall we measure. If the wall also holds the television, see TV units; if it is a work corner, a study table with shelves above may suit better.
Why bookshelves sag, and how we stop it
A full shelf of hardbacks is far heavier than it looks. The usual failure is a long span of thin board with no support in the middle. We keep spans short, add fixed dividers on wide walls, and use a thicker or edge-banded board where a long run is wanted. The span and board go on the quote, so you can compare like for like.
- Span. Shorter shelves between uprights carry more weight without bowing
- Board. Plywood or HDHMR chosen for the load, not the cheapest sheet
- Back panel. A proper back keeps the unit square and stops books touching a damp wall
- Anchoring. Tall units are fixed to the wall so they cannot tip
Open shelves, doors, or a mix
Open shelving is quick to use and good for books you reach daily. Near a road-facing window, dust settles fast, so many Mumbai homes put doors or a closed cabinet in the lower half and keep the top open. Glass shutters suit collections you want to see but not dust. Drawers take files, chargers, and remotes.
Older walls in Fort, Dadar, and Bandra are often out of plumb, and a straight shelf line makes that obvious. We scribe the unit to the wall, and that labour is on the quote. Outer walls that get damp in the monsoon need a gap and the right board; read monsoon furniture care.

Common Mumbai layouts
- A full library wall in the living room, floor to ceiling, with a ladder rail or a loft above for rarely used items
- Shelves wrapped around a TV, with closed storage below for set-top boxes and wires
- A narrow, shallow bookshelf in a passage where a deep cabinet would block the way
- Shelving above a desk in a kids' room or home office
What the price depends on
A standalone bookshelf sits with custom furniture. Simpler pieces start from an indicative ₹18,000. That is not a full-height wall unit and not a city average. Width, height, doors, glass, drawers, and finish move the number; the site visit sets it. See custom furniture cost in Mumbai for how we price, the process for how the job runs, and the 1-year workmanship warranty.

FAQ
Not if the span and board are right. Books are heavy, so we keep shelf spans shorter, use thicker or edged boards for long runs, and add a fixed divider where needed. We write the span and board on the quote.
Yes. A wall unit that wraps a TV, a window, or a beam is a common Mumbai job. We measure the openings, switchboards, and AC pipes on site so the shelves work around them.
Open shelves suit books you use and are easy to reach. Doors or a lower closed cabinet keep dust and clutter out, which matters near a road-facing window in Mumbai. Most walls work best as a mix.
A tall unit is anchored to the wall so it cannot tip, especially with children at home. We check whether the wall is brick, block, or RCC before drilling, and note it on site.
No. It is our indicative starting band for a simpler custom furniture piece, not a full-height wall unit and not a city average. Final price follows a site visit. Call or WhatsApp +91 9987911330.
